Existing Data Centers

Several key data centers are currently operational in Greater Manchester:

  • Equinix Manchester: Operates multiple facilities (MA1, MA2, MA3, MA5) offering high-resilience colocation, interconnectivity with major internet exchanges, and scalable power densities.

  • Zen Internet Data Center (Rochdale): Provides broadband, hosting, security, and cloud services, supporting SMEs and enterprises.

  • Host Europe Group (part of GoDaddy): Offers hosting and domain services, though specific details on Manchester facilities are limited.

Planned Developments

A major upcoming project is Kao Data’s new facility in Stockport, a £350 million investment set to deliver up to 40MW of capacity across nine data halls. The facility, designed for high-performance computing and AI applications, is expected to be operational by late 2025.

Physical Requirements of Data Centers

Designing and operating a data center involves key considerations:

  • Cooling: Advanced HVAC systems manage server heat, often accounting for nearly 50% of power consumption.

  • Power Supply: Reliable power sources, UPS systems, and backup generators are essential.

  • Connectivity: Proximity to fiber optic routes ensures low-latency, high-speed networking.

  • Building Structure: Secure, resilient buildings with raised floors, fire suppression, and controlled access.

Greater Manchester’s investment in data center infrastructure reflects its commitment to becoming a leading hub for digital and tech industries, ensuring robust support for startups and established enterprises alike.
